All of us golfers know there is no point to traveling to a golf resort or go on a golf vacation unless you bring your own clubs. But with the airlines now charging up to $100 for a 3rd bag, how do you tell your wife to throw her things into your one bag and leave her luggage behind? The answer is you don't, so therefore you have to pay the piper. Or do you?
One thing to consider is the safety and value of your clubs - especially in the hands of airlines that are famous for losing luggage. The last time I flew with my clubs, they were almost the LAST off the plane
and came out in an area far away from the carousel of luggage, requiring me to gather my one checked bag and drag my clubs through the airport to get to a shuttle area.
Another choice to consider then is to leave your clubs behind but as one who has used 'rental' clubs, I can attest to the extreme distaste golfers have for them. And I am not even a good golfer. But I still want either MY clubs or a set of better clubs to use, which is generally NOT what rental clubs offer.
Well here's a solution. A new outfit (In AZ and FL only right now) called GolfClubsAway.com has instituted a service where you can reserve a custom set of clubs delivered to your hotel for a reasonable cost. I checked their site for Phoenix AZ and they will deliver a set of Nike's for 2 days for $40 per day. Not exactly the $12.50 I generally rent clubs for but then I don't usually get a Nike Sasquatch either. I checked Miami Fl. area for simple right handed clubs and found $35/day for a Nike set.
If you are golfing for a week or two, it is probably better to FEDEX your clubs ahead and keep them away from the gremlins at the airport and NOT pay the $40 per day fee to rent. Or pay the checked bag fee which may come to $100 or $200 r/t and you get the benefit of using your own clubs.
But for the "in and out in a couple days" business traveler to Florida or Arizona, this service could not only be cost effective but a whole lot simpler than packing your clubs for 'travel' just to golf one or two times!
